This fall, QUEEN ELIZABETH debuts as our newest Cunard ocean liner and continues our 170-year tradition of satisfying the palates of distinguished travellers. The fine restaurants and bars aboard this QUEEN will provide an array of culinary experiences that honour previous venues and expand upon those currently aboard QUEEN MARY 2 and QUEEN VICTORIA.
Introducing The Verandah
In their day, The Verandah Grills on Queen Mary and the original Queen Elizabeth were perhaps the most exclusive dining rooms on par with the world’s private clubs. Available to first-class passengers, they would be frequented by royalty, film stars and the rich and famous. The Verandah on the new QUEEN ELIZABETH offers guests an experience reminiscent of dining at the original Verandah, whilst they enjoy the very best in French cuisine, with menus created by Chef Jean-Marie Zimmermann, winner of a coveted Michelin star.
Travel Agent and Cunard Set the Stage for First Marriage Proposal On Board Queen Elizabeth
Theatre Boxes in Queen Elizabeth’s Royal Court Theatre were packed for the dazzling new production show, “A Slice of Saturday Night,” on a recent evening during the ship’s current Maiden Voyage. And as Entertainment Director Alastair Greener recounts in the latest edition of his blog, WeAreCunard.com, guests seated in box number six were about to enjoy an especially memorable night. A few months ago, Greener was contacted by Susan Mirabito, travel operations manager for Travel Network in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, to enlist the ship’s assistance with a special request.
Jim McCracken, mayor of neighboring Freedom Township, wanted to propose to his girlfriend,
Lisa Lehman from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, during the voyage.
The ship happily complied and reserved a table in The Verandah, to be followed with a reserved Theatre Box later that evening. Jim shared that he had met Lisa at a business conference and that they were partnered in a group leadership class. As part of an exercise, they were directed to look into each other’s eyes for fifteen seconds. Jim said it was definitely love at first sight, and so he wished to recreate the moment as part of his proposal. As the performance in the theatre came to an end, Jim asked Lisa to look into his eyes for fifteen seconds – at which point he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. Of course, she said yes. “I cannot say enough about the Cunard staff and how responsive they were to my requests for Jim. Great lengths were taken to insure that Lisa was truly surprised,” said Mirabito. “The evening was beyond the expectations of Jim and me, and I am most appreciative of the attention Cunard provided to facilitate this memorable occasion. This is a story that I am certain will be passed down from generation to generation,” she added. Jim and Lisa have their first job as an engaged couple this Friday, as they have been asked to witness the Renewal of Vows Ceremony of another couple at their dinner table! Cunard wishes the couple every happiness, and is proud that the Line’s Queen Elizabeth could be a part of this wonderful new beginning in their life together.
Art and Memorabilia Aboard Queen Elizabeth Reflect Cunard’s British Heritage
Cunard has always afforded guests an opportunity to be enriched by artists from around the globe through extensive collections on board, and from the décor of the ships themselves. When our newest Cunarder, QUEEN ELIZABETH enters service in less than a month, the artwork that graces her will reflect the art déco period, pay homage to Cunard's Queens and its ocean liner history and showcase her ties to Great Britain’s Royal Family.
In addition, Queen Elizabeth’s fine arts programme will depart from the art auction format with Cunard’s introduction of a new on board art experience through a partnership with Clarendon Fine Art, one of London’s most distinguished new retail galleries in the exclusive Mayfair district.
“Queen Elizabeth’s artwork will truly reflect Cunard’s distinctive heritage and style: rich art déco pieces, expertly crafted maritime paintings, and works reflecting our special ties to Britain’s Royal Family showcase our storied history,” said Peter Shanks, president of Cunard Line. “And our new partnership with London’s Clarendon Gallery provides an exciting new offering for our guests who enjoy contemporary art.”
